Overview

What lpg boiler installations involve

What it is

An LPG boiler works like a standard gas boiler but runs on liquefied petroleum gas supplied from a bulk tank or bottles, rather than the mains gas network. Installing one involves the boiler, its gas supply connection from the tank or bottles, flue and controls. We are LPG registered alongside our standard Gas Safe natural gas work.

Who it's for

It suits rural and semi-rural homes not connected to the gas grid, properties currently heated by an old LPG boiler, and homes moving away from oil or electric storage heating that already have, or can install, an LPG supply.

When you need it

Time to look at a new LPG boiler is when your existing one is old, unreliable or inefficient, when you are renovating an off-grid property, or when an engineer advises repairs are no longer worthwhile.

Why use a professional

LPG behaves differently from natural gas: it is heavier than air and stored under pressure, so working on LPG appliances requires specific registration. Correct installation keeps the system safe and ensures the boiler is set up for LPG rather than natural gas.

What happens if it's left

The cost of putting it off

LPG is usually more expensive per unit of heat than mains gas, so an inefficient boiler costs off-grid homes even more.

Higher fuel bills

An old, inefficient LPG boiler burns through more fuel from the tank every winter.

Breakdowns in remote locations

Off-grid homes can be harder to reach quickly, so an unreliable boiler is a bigger risk.

Safety concerns

LPG appliances must be fitted and maintained by engineers qualified for LPG work.

Wrong setup

A boiler not correctly configured for LPG will not burn efficiently or safely.

Common mistakes we see

  • Using an engineer who is not registered for LPG work.
  • Replacing like-for-like without checking whether a different boiler type would suit better.
  • Ignoring the condition of the system pipework and radiators.
  • Skipping annual servicing on LPG appliances.

Our process

How we do it, step by step

In detail

LPG heating explained

For homes off the gas grid, LPG offers boiler-based heating that works much like mains gas.

Bulk tanks and bottles

LPG is supplied either in a bulk tank refilled by a supplier or in cylinders (bottles). The supply arrangement affects how the boiler is connected.

LPG combi, system and regular boilers

As with natural gas, LPG boilers come as combis, system boilers and regular boilers. The right type depends on your hot water demand and existing system.

Configuration for LPG

Many boilers can run on natural gas or LPG but must be correctly configured for the fuel. This is part of our commissioning.

Hot water options

Larger off-grid homes often benefit from a system boiler with an unvented cylinder. We are G3 certified to fit these.

Comparing with a heat pump

For some off-grid properties, an air source heat pump may be worth considering. We can advise on both, as we are accredited for heat pumps and registered for LPG.

Servicing LPG appliances

LPG boilers should be serviced annually, just like natural gas boilers. We service all gas appliances.

Choosing between combi and system LPG boilers

In a smaller off-grid cottage with one bathroom, an LPG combi saves space and removes the need for a cylinder. In a larger farmhouse or family home with several bathrooms, a system boiler with a cylinder is usually the better choice because it can supply several outlets at once. We look at your household size, water pressure and existing pipework before recommending either, and we explain the trade-offs so the decision is yours.

Replacing an older LPG boiler

Many off-grid homes still run older, non-condensing LPG boilers. Replacing one with a modern condensing model, alongside a system clean and better controls, is often the most practical way to cut fuel use without changing fuel type. We fit, register and commission the new boiler and add our 12-month workmanship warranty.

Off-grid homes in the North East

Rural parts of County Durham and some outlying villages across our area are not connected to mains gas. For these homes, LPG offers boiler heating that behaves much like a mains-gas system, with the same choice of combi, system and regular boilers.

Getting more from each tank fill

Because LPG is bought by the tank or bottle, efficiency matters. A modern condensing boiler, a clean system, good controls and well-sized radiators all help reduce how often you need to refill. We look at the whole system, not just the boiler.

Safety around LPG

LPG is heavier than air and can collect at low level if it leaks, so appliance location, ventilation and pipework are particularly important. Working on LPG requires specific registration, which we hold alongside our Gas Safe registration.

FAQs

LPG Boiler Installations: your questions answered

Are you registered to work on LPG?

Yes, we are LPG registered as well as Gas Safe registered for natural gas.

How much does an LPG boiler cost?

It depends on the boiler and installation. We give a clear written quote after a free survey and do not publish prices.

Do you take a deposit?

No, we do not take deposits on boiler installations.

Can my natural gas boiler be converted to LPG?

Some boilers can be configured for either fuel. We will check your model and advise.

Do you supply the LPG itself?

No, LPG is supplied by a fuel supplier. We install and maintain the boiler and its connection.

How long does an LPG boiler installation take?

It depends on whether it is a straight swap or involves system changes. We confirm timings on your quote.

What warranty is included?

The manufacturer's warranty, which we register, plus our own 12-month workmanship warranty.

Which areas do you cover?

All NE, SR and DH postcodes and some DL postcodes, including rural areas around Durham, Stanley and Bishop Auckland.

Is an LPG boiler more efficient than my old one?

Modern condensing LPG boilers are generally far more efficient than older non-condensing models, so you get more heat from each tank fill. We explain the options for your home on the survey.

Do LPG boilers need servicing?

Yes. LPG boilers should be serviced every year, like any gas boiler, to stay safe and keep the manufacturer's warranty valid. We service all gas appliances.

Should I consider a heat pump instead of LPG?

For some off-grid homes it is worth comparing. As accredited heat pump installers and LPG-registered engineers, we can give balanced advice on both.
