Overview
What central heating installations involve
What it is
A central heating installation covers the whole system that heats your home: the boiler, the pipework, radiators and controls. It can be a complete new system in a property that has none, or a partial upgrade, extra radiators, rerouted pipework or a change of system type. Gas boiler and central heating installs are one of our core specialisms.
Who it's for
It suits homes without central heating, older properties with inefficient or undersized systems, extensions and loft conversions that need new radiators, and renovations where pipework is being moved anyway.
When you need it
Typical signs are rooms that never get warm, radiators that are cold at the bottom, very old microbore or poorly routed pipework, frequent system leaks, or a layout change that leaves some rooms without heating.
Why use a professional
A heating system only works well if the boiler, pipe sizes and radiators are matched to the heat each room loses. Getting this wrong means cold rooms, noisy pipes and a boiler that works harder than it should. Professional design and installation get the balance right.
What happens if it's left
The cost of putting it off
A poorly designed heating system costs you in comfort and running costs every winter it stays in place.
Cold rooms and damp
Under-heated rooms are more prone to condensation and mould.
High bills
An unbalanced system makes the boiler run longer to bring cold rooms up to temperature.
Leaks and corrosion
Old pipework and radiators corrode internally, producing sludge and eventually leaks.
Strain on the boiler
Blocked or undersized pipework can shorten the life of even a new boiler.
Common mistakes we see
- Adding radiators without checking the boiler and pipework can cope.
- Choosing radiators by looks rather than heat output for the room.
- Fitting a new boiler onto an old, dirty system without cleaning it.
- Leaving out proper controls such as thermostatic radiator valves.
Our process
How we do it, step by step
- 01
Survey
We look at the property, existing system, room sizes and how you use each space.
- 02
System design & quote
We plan the boiler, pipe routes, radiator positions and controls, and give you a written quote.
- 03
Installation
We run pipework neatly, fit radiators and valves, and install or connect the boiler and controls.
- 04
Fill, flush & balance
We clean and fill the system, then balance the radiators so every room heats evenly.
- 05
Handover & warranty
We show you the controls, and our 12-month workmanship warranty applies.

In detail
Designing a central heating system that works
Every home loses heat differently. A well-designed system accounts for room size, insulation and how the house is used.
Full vs partial installations
A full installation replaces or creates the entire system. A partial job might add radiators to an extension, reroute pipework during a renovation, or replace failing radiators and valves.
Radiator sizing
Each radiator should be chosen for the heat the room needs, not just to fill a wall. Oversized radiators waste money; undersized ones leave rooms cold.
Pipework
Pipe size and routing affect how evenly heat reaches each radiator. Older microbore systems can be prone to blockages, and we can advise if upgrading is worthwhile.
Open-vented and sealed systems
Older homes often have open-vented systems with a loft header tank. Many modern installs use a sealed, pressurised system. We explain which suits your boiler and home.
Controls
Thermostatic radiator valves, a room thermostat and a programmer, or smart heating controls, let you heat only the rooms you use, when you use them.
Future-proofing
If you are considering a heat pump in future, radiator sizes and pipework can be planned with lower flow temperatures in mind. We are accredited air source heat pump installers.
What a good installation looks like
A well-installed heating system has pipework that is clipped, level and routed out of the way, radiators fitted securely at the right height with valves that are easy to reach, and a system that has been cleaned, filled with inhibitor and balanced before handover. It should heat up evenly and run quietly. These details are what separate a system that works for decades from one that causes problems within a few winters, and they are exactly what our customers notice and mention in their reviews.
Extensions and loft conversions
Extra rooms add heat demand. Before adding radiators, we check the boiler has enough output and that the pipework can carry the extra flow. Sometimes this means upsizing pipework or adjusting the system; sometimes the existing boiler copes comfortably. We explain which applies before work starts.
Older North East properties
Many homes in the region have systems that have been extended piecemeal over decades, with a mix of pipe sizes and radiator types. A survey lets us decide what can stay, what should be replaced, and how to bring the whole system into balance.
Hot water as part of the system
Central heating and hot water are linked. When we design a heating system, we also consider whether a combi, a system boiler with an unvented cylinder, or a regular boiler will serve your hot water best. We are G3 certified to install unvented cylinders.
FAQs
Central Heating Installations: your questions answered
Can you install central heating in a house that has none?
Yes. We design and install complete systems including the boiler, pipework, radiators and controls.
How much does central heating cost?
It depends on the size of the property and the extent of the work. We give a clear written quote after a free survey: we do not publish prices.
How long does an installation take?
A partial job can be quick; a full system takes longer. We confirm the timescale on your quote.
Can you add radiators to an extension?
Yes. We check your boiler and pipework can support the extra load first.
Why are some of my radiators cold at the bottom?
Usually sludge in the system. A powerflush often fixes it, and we can replace radiators that are too far gone.
Do I need to replace my boiler too?
Not always. We assess whether your boiler is suitable for the system and tell you honestly.
Do you take a deposit?
No. The only job we take a deposit on is a full bathroom refit.
Which areas do you cover?
All NE, SR and DH postcodes and some DL postcodes, including Durham, Chester-le-Street, Sunderland and Newcastle.
Can you upgrade an old open-vented system?
Often, yes. Converting to a sealed system can remove the need for a loft header tank. We check whether the existing pipework and radiators are suitable first.
Will a new system make my house warmer?
A correctly sized and balanced system should bring every room up to temperature. We size radiators for each room's heat demand rather than guessing.
